Orifice plate is a thin stainless-steel plate usually with circular orifice and if its centre is in the axis of piping it is called centric orifice plate. Orifice can also have other shape than circular (see chapter on special orifice plates). Construction simplicity and unambiguous definition by ISO 6167-1 standard, by which they are predetermined for the widest use in all kinds of flow measurements, are their best merits.

Orifice Plates
ANSI B 16.36 Orifice Plates
Taping flanges with centric orifice plate provide economic and progressive method of build-in orifice plate measurement of flow volume. Since the tapings of differential pressure are integrated directly into the flange body, there is no need to supply orifice plate flange or to bore pressure tapings into the piping face.
Eccentric Orifice Plates
It is analogous to classical orifice plate, orifice plate bore is eccentric and when flow profile is oriented in the lower part of horizontal (inclined) piping, flow of impurities in the measured fluid is enabled. Due to use of eccentric orifice plate in petrochemistry, chemical and atomic industry, it is made of SST grade stainless steel and of steels with high content of nickel (inconell, hastelloy).
Segmental orifice plates
Restriction of flow section of the measured fluid is ensured by circle segment (plate with direct sharp edge in the circle section). When orienting flow section in the lower part of horizontal (oblique) piping, flow of impurities in the measured fluid is enabled. Differential pressure tapings are placed vertically in the upper part of orifice plate. Segmental orifice plate can be supplied separately with differential pressure tapings as working meter without verification or including straight piping sections as verified meter.
Multi-bore orifice plates
Except for all advantages of centric orifice plates (such as simplicity, replaceability, reliability), multi-bore orifice plates have lower built-in lengths enabling wider possibilities of their use.
Restricting orifice plates
Restricting orifice plates enable to reduce pressure of medium in the orifice plate outlet (under constant flow) to required level, i.e. these function as hydraulic resistor. If these are used in cascades, they gradually decrease medium pressure and prevent it from cavitation.
Special orifice plates
Adjustable segmental orifice plate
use: transfer gas station with continuous operation.
Segmental orifice plate enables to change scope of measured flows by change of flow section during operation (change of depth of segment insertion). This way change between pressure difference and flow is modified continuously.
